Source Tagging label placement is fairly simple and straightforward. Whenever possible,
labels are placed directly behind the UPC barcode, parallel to the direction of the UPC or
within 7.6 cm (3 in) of the barcode.
The retail industry has agreed to a list of standards that allow the EAS label to perform to its
highest level. You might view the entire list of standards on the VICS (Voluntary Inter-Industry Communication Standards) website www.vics.org. You should understand that
many factors are considered before deciding on the optimal label placement.
Basic Guidelines
The following is a list of factors that determine where the label is placed within or on the packaging or product:
- Both AM and RF technologies are adversely affected by products containing heavy metal content and perform differently when placed in close proximity to the metal product or metallic surfaces of the packaging. The metal might actually shield the label’s signal, causing failures to deactivate and unnecessary alarms at the door.
- The label is placed within 7.6 cm (3 in) of the barcode for consistent label deactivation at the point of sale.
- On heavy items, the cashier must have the capability of deactivating the label by contact deactivation, in case the item remains in the cart.
- The label should not cover important product information. In many cases, to present the product in the best light, graphics on the packaging or the packing itself might require modification to accommodate label placement.
- Most retailers do not allow topical label application as the label is too easily defeated.
- Concealment of the label is preferred on carded products when possible.
Packaging Challenges
- Skin or shrink wrapping carded products might affect the performance of the EAS label due to the high temperatures and wrap tension created during the process. This is determined only after the label is applied and wrapped.
- On products that have no packaging, customized solutions might be necessary. Please consult with a TAG Certification Centre for certified solution providers.
- Metallic packaging might affect the performance of the label. This is determined during the certification process.
- If there is more than one barcode on the packaging, you must choose only one location and eliminate additional locations. The cashier must know where the EAS label is located when concealed inside the packaging.
