Source Tagging Label Placement Standards

Phase I or Topical Application
The application of EAS labels on the outside of the product or the packaging must be within a 7.6 cm (3 in) radius of the UPC barcode. Most retailers do not allow topical tagging as the label is too easily defeated. Phase I is most commonly found when the product is too large or heavy to remove from the shopping cart. You must have approval from the retail customer to apply EAS label topically.

3" radius

Phase II or Inside Packaging
The EAS label is applied inside the packaging, making the label much harder to defeat. Heavy and large items might be certified Phase II with a topical solution, however, the EAS label must be concealed with clear tape or other means of securing the label such as die cutting the box so the label is visible, making it more tamperproof.

Alternative placement for heavy items:
Die cut hole for heavy items: Label must be covered by clear tape.

Phase III or Inside the Product
The EAS label is placed inside the product itself providing the highest level of security. Phase III is most commonly used for certification of power tools and electronics such as DVRs and CD players. This requires extra certification time and prior approval by the retailer.
